Team profile

Shanghai Volleyball Club

Shanghai Volleyball Club have been a dominant force in the Chinese League since its inauguration in 1997, having won 13 titles in 21 editions to date – including the last three running.
They are one of the two clubs awarded a Wild Card to compete in the 2017 FIVB Men’s Club World Championship (the other being Poland’s PGE Skra Belchatow).
Shanghai’s first international success was a bronze medal in the 2001 Asian Club Championship in Shehong. They followed up with two more bronze medals in 2005 in Islamabad and 2011 in Palembang, before claiming silver in 2012 at home when they lost in the final 3-1 to Qatar’s Al-Arabi Doha.

Shen Qiong

Shen Qiong is the former captain of the Shanghai Volleyball Club who led the club in its record nine consecutive national titles in China.
He is also the former captain of the China Men’s National Team, which he led to the fifth place in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
Following his retirement as a player in 2013, Shen became head coach of the club in 2014 – the youngest head coach of a senior professional club in the history of the national league.
As coach he has led the club to three consecutive national titles and was named the Best Coach of the Year for the 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17 seasons, being the only male player to have won the China League title both as a player and a coach.
In 2017, Shen also became assistant coach in the National Team.
