Zenit destroy Dinamo for record 9th Russia title

 

Artem Volvich and Wilfredo Leon put up a double block as Zenit Kazan sweep Dinamo Moscow for a record ninth Russian championship title.

Lausanne, Switzerland, May 11, 2017 - Zenit Kazan became the most decorated team in the history of the Russian Superleague Thursday evening, when they crushed Dinamo Moscow 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-16) in the final to claim their fourth straight and ninth overall title.



Zenit are now alone at the top of the winners' table, leaving Belogorie Belgorod in second place with eight titles since the competition began in 1992. Dinamo Moscow have won just two - the last time in 2008.

Wilfredo Leon with 18 points and USA's Matt Anderson with 14 drove Zenit to victory as the Tatarstan side outplayed Dinamo across the board. Pavel Kruglov with 11 points was Dinamo's best scorer.

Earlier in Moscow, Lokomotiv Novosibirsk had shut out Belogorie Belgorod 3-0 (31-29, 25-22, 25-10) in the bronze medal match, with Lukash Davish scoring 19 points and Sergei Savin 17. Lokomotiv overwhelmed Belogorie on the blocking front with 12 stuffs to five and attacked for 61% (40/66) to 41% (33/80) as the losers struggled in reception.

It was Lokomotiv's second time on the podium of the Russian Superleague after a silver medal in 2014.
