Top clubs blast into 2017 as action resumes

Lausanne, Switzerland, January 8, 2017 - Table leaders Cucine Lube Civitanova opened the year in Italy's UnipolSai men's A1 League with a thundering 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-17) home win over Revivre Milan Sunday evening before 2,700 fans, as club competitions around the world resumed after the mid-season break.

Bulgaria's Tsvetan Sokolov scored 18 points (13/19 for 68% in attacking in addition to 4 aces) to lead Lube, who retain a six-point lead at the top of the standings after 18 matches. Osmany Juantorena and Dragan Stankovic added another 10 each for Lube.




Diatec Trentino, bronze medallists of the 2016 FIVB Club World Championship, continue to chase the leaders, after a 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-20) win at home over LPR Piacenza, with 16 points from Jan Stokr and another 12 from Filippo Lanza.

Zenit pick up were they left off
Zenit Kazan, the reigning European champions and 2017 FIVB Men's Club World Championship runners-up, continued their total domination of the Russian Superleague after the mid-season break, thrashing Dinamo Krasnodar 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-15) away, with 14 points from Maxim Mikhailov and another 10 each from Wilfredo Leon and Andrey Ashchev.




The win keeps Kazan - undefeated after 14 matches - six points ahead of Dinamo Moscow, who also won away in straight sets, 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-19) over Fakel Novy Urengoy, with Konstantin Bakun scoring 16 points (including 14/23 for 63% in attacking).

Sada Cruzeiro storm into new year
In Brazil, reigning FIVB men's club world champions Sada Cruzeiro of Contagem opened the new year at home at the Riacho, crushing Sao Bernardo 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 25-14) to remain undefeated after 12 matches in the Superleague. Eder Levi Kock led a lineup composed mostly of reserves, emerging top scorer of the game at 11 points, including 5 of his teams 13 aces (to Sao Bernardo's one). He was voted MVP of the game.
