Semifinal berths in sight at Club Worlds

 

The passion of Cucine Lube Civitanova brought defending champions Sada Cruzeiro crashing down on the opening day of the 2017 FIVB Men's Club World Championship.

Opole, Poland, December 13, 2017 - Berths in the semifinals could already be secured on Wednesday as the 2017 FIVB Volleyball Men's Club World Championship enters its second day. The top two teams of the two four-team pools in Opole and Lodz at the end of three days of pool play advance to Saturday's semifinals, ahead of the medals matches on Sunday in Krakow.

In Opole, Italian champions Cucine Lube Civitanova defeated defending champions Sada Cruzeiro Volei on the opening day, but on Wednesday face hosts Zaksa Kedzierzyn-Kozle who come from a five-set comeback win over Asian champions Sarmaye Bank of Tehran.

The Brazilian side will need to quickly pull together against the Iranians to avoid bowing out of the tournament early.

At 2 hours 23 minutes that Zaksa v Sarmaye Bank match in Opole on Tuesday was the longest in the history of the competition, beating the 2:21 duration of Trentino Diatec v UPCN San Juan in 2014.

Over in Lodz, meanwhile, European champions Zenit Kazan could secure their ticket to Krakow on Wednesday when they take on China champions Shanghai Golden Age, following their opening day sweep of Argentina champions Personal Bolivar.

And later in the day local favourites Skra Belchatow could secure the second ticket of the pool if they beat Personal Bolivar, after their straight-set win on Tuesday over Shanghai.
