Sarmayeh Bank lead Iran Premier League midway through Regular Season

Sarmayeh Bank Tehran players celebrate finishing top of the table midawy through the Iranian Premier League Regular Season.

Lausanne, Switzerland, December 20, 2016 - Defending champions Sarmayeh Bank Tehran have taken an early lead in the race for the 2017 title in Iran's men's Premier League, finishing the top half of the Regular Season at the top of the table with just one defeat in 11 matches.

Sarmayeh Bank, founded only in 2015, are the reigning Asian champions (after a 3-1 win in the final of the 2016 Asian Club Championship over Qatar's Al-Arabi). They are the only club already in posession of a ticket for the 2017 FIVB Club World Championship.

The Iranian Volleyball Federation preview the start of the second half of the Premier League Regular Season on their Instagram feed.

Sarmayeh Bank wrapped up the first half of the season with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-18) sweep of Shahrdari Tabriz to extend their record to 10-1. Their sole defeat this season was to Salehin Varamin 3-1 (30-32, 25-20, 28-26, 25-23) last month.

Hot in pursuit of Sarmayeh Bank are their crosstown rivals Paykan Tehran. The most successful club in the history of the Iranian league with 12 titles are just one point behind in the standings and on a 9-1 record.

The top eight teams after the end of the Regular Season advance to the playoffs.
