Favourites off to flying start in South American Club Champs

Todor Aleksiev of Personal Bolivar punches through the double Unilever Lima block, as the 2017 South American Club Championship opens in Montes Claros.

Lausanne, Switzerland, February 22, 2017 - Hosts Montes Claros Volei have taken an early lead in pool play at the South American Men's Club Championship, after they demolished Uruguay champions Bohemios of Montevideo 3-0 (25-15, 25-9, 25-21), Tuesday night at the Tancredo Neves Gymnasium of the Minas Gerais city.

It was the first win ever in the competition for Montes Claros, who are making their debut in the South American Club Championship and it gave coach Marcelinho the opportunity to bring on several of his reserves off the bench.

Montes Claros will next face, Wednesday evening, defending continental champions and current leaders of the Brazilian Superleague Sada Cruzeiro of Contagem in a game that will likely decide first place in Pool A.

Previously in Montes Claros, the two representatives of Argentina both opened their campaigns with comfortable wins that give them the advantage for tickets to the semifinals from Pool B.

Bulgaria's Todor Aleksiev with 13 points and a great performance by Pablo Crer led reigning Argentina champions Personal Bolivar to a sweep of Peru champions Unilever Lima 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-11).

And the 2015 South American Club Championship gold medallists UPCN San Juan crushed Bolivia's San Martin of Cochabamba 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-10).

The top two teams of each pool advance to Friday's semifinals.

The winner of the competition gets a direct ticket to the 2017 FIVB Volleyball Men's Club World Championship, next December in Poland.
